20 No-Spend Ideas for Indoor Entertainment at Home – When You Are Alone

Being home with your family or housemates, and spending time with them without spending money is easy to do. But what to do to have fun when you’re alone, the weather is awful, and you don’t want (or can’t) spend any money?

Here are some ideas:

1. Sleep

This is particularly useful for those of you who are always busy and tend to suffer a lack of sleep.

2. Meditate

If you never meditate, this is the best time to start. If you meditate regularly, this is the best time to meditate more. It’s not only relaxing but also helps reduce anxiety, lengthen attention span, and much more. Here are more details of science-based benefits of meditation.

3. Experiment in the Kitchen

Bake a cake. Go ahead with some exotic food recipe or even use your own creativity to create whatever food you’re craving for. My favourite recipe site is Taste as the instruction is clear.

4. Read Books

These days, not only the books are cheaper electronically, you can also get them for free. There are plenty of sites that can give you books for free. The public library is one of them. And electronically, there are over 60,000 free ebooks for you to download at Project Gutenberg site. Or just google “free ebooks” and you’ll see plenty of options there.

5. Write Anything

Don’t feel like writing a journal? How about writing letters? Or perhaps try creative writing like stories or poems?

6. Draw (or Paint) Anything

Or if you can’t draw, time to follow some basic tutorial to start drawing.

7. Watch Movies

There are plenty of free options when it comes to watching movies. You don’t have to pay any subscriptions. Youtube is one of the main sites, just type “full movie” and all the available free movies will be listed for you to watch it for free. And don’t forget your local library. Most local libraries lend DVDs for free.

8. Watch Tutorials or Inspirational Speeches

If you’re not into movies and just want to watch something productive like tutorials or inspirational speeches, YouTube is the best site for those.

9. Update Your Social Media

If you have nothing interesting to share then time to go through your past posts and delete or untag all embarrassing pictures on your social media.

10. Start a blog

You can start writing for fun, or writing for people to learn from you. Whichever you do, you may want to think in long term, that your blog may one day bring you money and therefore, you may want to learn all the basics needed to have your own blog. Youtube has plenty of tutorial about blogging for beginners.

11. Learn a New Language

These days you can learn anything from the internet and language is one of the most interesting ones to learn. Duolingo is one of the apps that makes it easy to learn a new language.

12. Plan your next holiday

Get a pen and paper (or type your plans on an excel spreadsheet as it can also function as a budget) and start planning your holiday… or an imaginary holiday.

13. Make or update your vision board

A vision board is a board on which you display images that represent where you want to be, what you want to be, do, have in your life. If you want to do the old fashion way, get a scissor, glue, and blank paper and start cutting images (from newspapers, magazines, posters, etc) and paste them on the blank paper. If you want to do it electronically, Pinterest is the best to do this.

14. Back up your important files

Trash all useless files and apps from your PC or laptop, and back up all your important files (pictures, songs, etc) to a portable hard drive.

15. Build a New Playlist

Organize your songs, put them in the right categories, build a new playlist.

16. Dance

In front of the mirror would be even more fun.

17. Play or learn a musical instrument if you have any

Again, YouTube is the best source to learn if you’re keen. Just type “how to play piano” or “how to play guitar” and you’ll get heaps of tutorial videos to follow.

18. Learn how to Juggle

Because… why not. Here is a tutorial for beginners. Have fun!

19. Take Selfie

Time to get to know you better. Study which sides your best angles are. Bored without any filters? Try Snapchat, they have funny filters updated regularly. Then post your new (or weird) selfies on your social media if you dare.

20. Play games

You can play board games, video games, or mobile games. I don’t have the latest play station and I’m not into board games. But I’m very keen on mobile games. I’m currently playing Sims Freeplay, Simcity Buildit, and Township. These games are interesting and they’re not as demanding as other games and the graphics are really beautiful. And the best part is that they’re FREE. Unless you want to speed up some steps or have some perks, then you can purchase their in-game offers.
